The River Rapids

Thembani

When I was 7, my family went on a holiday trip to Center Parcs UK. The place was surrounded by a forest with tall trees. There were 4 different types of cabins: maple, redwood, birch, and pine. We were in a maple one. The cabin had a TV and 2 bedrooms. I slept with my mom since she couldn’t handle my brother and dad snoring. On the first day we went to the Center Parcs waterpark. It had a pirate ship with slides all over, a lazy river, a bunch of cool slides. There was also a terrifying one, but the best of all was the river rapids: a waterslide with a bunch of strong currents and weird obstacles in the way.

While we were riding on the slides I decided to challenge my family to a race on the river rapids. They all said yes to the idea and we went to the start of the line.

“ Ok: 3, 2, 1, Go!,” my mom said, but before she did, everyone dashed down the slide. We were all determined to win and swam the best we could. Unfortunately this was not a simple slide or swimming race, as there were multiple paths, obstacles and bumps.

“Splash” the water went as I dived face first into the mini pool. My dad and mom were ahead of me and my brother took a different path. I was swimming really fast, but every time I took over I was pulled back by my dad. I knew at this rate I was going to lose if I didn’t do something soon. Suddenly, my brother came rushing in where the paths met and took first place.

“What?” my dad said, confused by his sudden lead. But my brother's victory was not for long because my dad pulled him back which led to him being in first place and my brother losing control in the twisting and turning rapids.

“AAAHH!” My brother screamed, but no one went back. Even if we wanted to, the current was way too strong then. Besides, we were almost at the end and no one wanted to lose.

My mom, my dad, and me were at the final stretch. There were no more obstacles and there were no rapids, so now it was all down to swimming strength. To me, the race was the ultimate showdown of life and death, and whatever friendly competitiveness was in my brain had vanished completely. At this point, something hit my head and I started swimming as fast as I could. I had put myself in try-hard mode and swam like the world was about to end. My dad and mom tried to stop me, but they could only watch as I closed my eyes, and won the race.

After I won the race I felt exhausted. It was as if I broke all the bones in my body over 1000 times. But still, it was worth it.

“Well done, Thembani,” my mom said.

“ Whatever,” my dad said. “I’m sure he cheated.”

My dad was super annoyed that he lost ,so to add salt to the wound I stuck my tongue out at him. My brother by then had finished in last place but didn’t care and walked up to my dad and slapped him in the face. He was grounded for a week, but it was totally worth it.

We were all very tired after that. My mom saw this and went and got us hotdogs.

“Who wants to eat?” my mom said.

“ME!” My brother and I said simultaneously. So we went and ate the hot dogs. They were the best hot dogs I had ever tasted. Since then, my dad has never raced me again and he was a coward. I hope he learned that cheating never makes you a winner, but it does give you a slap on the face!
